OUR MISSION (why we exist for God’s glory)

Finding rest and relationship in God through gospel-centred worship, discipleship, and community.

OUR VALUES (what we exist to do)

Gospel-centred worship, discipleship, and community.

This report is a testament to the working of God's faithfulness through the joys and sorrows of life through 2023 as the hope of the gospel is our foundation

  • On behalf of the elders, I'd like to share some of the highlights we've experienced this past year.

    • Our building provides numerous ministry opportunities, facilitating worship gatherings, evangelistic outreach and various group meetings. We are particularly grateful for our partnership with M2M, especially as they plan to establish a women's drop-in ministry later this year.

    • We are thankful for those serving in various ministries, as we seek to love and encourage each other in faith. Our church serves as a light of genuine relationships and compassion in an increasingly isolated society. Being in this location for five years has fostered growth in our shared faith and mutual care.

    • We acknowledge God's faithfulness in bringing us to this building. Looking ahead, we plan to start modest renovations in our worship space around January/February 2025. A committee is working on a five to ten year plan for building maintenance and renovations. We aim to honor God through diligent upkeep and simplicity of this space He has entrusted to us.

    • Our financial team has implemented new software to maintain updated records, ensuring transparency and keeping the congregation informed about the church's financial status.

    • We're grateful for the congregation's generosity, especially regarding building improvements. As we navigate financial challenges, we're balancing renovation needs with efficient building maintenance.

    • We've strengthened our elder and deacon ministry, with closer collaboration and training. We plan to present new candidates in September. We appreciate Ken B (deacon lead), Adam K (elder lead), and all who serve faithfully.

    • We're thankful for a church that loves the Word, one another, and evangelism. Despite tackling difficult Scriptures, we've grown in love for God, truth, and each other. From our humble beginnings 34 years ago, we now have numerous opportunities for care, evangelism, and missions. We strive for holiness, compassion, and faithfulness, focusing on sharing the good news of Jesus.

We pray to be found faithful, for God is abundant in faithfulness.

    You are in our prayers.

    The Elders

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
— Hebrews 4:14-16 (CSB)

Thankful for our Elders’ Board…

  • In 2023, we experienced a mix of celebrations and challenges, both on a personal level and as a church community. Our elders are committed to guiding the people of God with grace and truth. Throughout the year, we convened monthly to discuss, guide, and pray for GBC, and to delve into God’s word as we sought His will for His church. We are grateful for our elders and their families, and for their invaluable contribution to shepherding the people and advancing the kingdom of God.

Participating in church leadership has afforded us the incredible privilege of witnessing firsthand the work that God is doing - His abundant provision as He blesses His people, and His unwavering care as He supports His people through challenging times. God's faithfulness in the past forms the foundation of our hope for the future. Despite having witnessed God fulfill His promises time and time again, the reassurance that our hope will not disappoint us (Romans 5:5) is always welcome.

As we look ahead to the coming year, we do so with hope that God will equip us to minister to and bear witness to the community in which He has placed us, and that His name will be glorified there. As elders, we pray that He will empower us to care for His people effectively, and that He will raise up more leaders to join us in this mission and find fulfillment in being a part of this important work.

    Elder Board Members:
Adam Kinsman (Chairman), Nandor Weisz (Vice-Chairman), Alex Dinca, David Robinson (Lead Pastor), Tyler Oldrieve (Associate Pastor), Byron Burton (Associate Pastor), Haniel Davy (Associate Pastor)

Thankful for our Board of Directors…

  • Our board of directors, comprised of lay elders and other individuals from our church, oversees the legal and high-level organizational needs of GBC. We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of this board over the past year in updating and implementing policies and working towards this goal to better serve GBC and our community.

    Board of Directors Members:
Adam Kinsman, Nandor Weisz, Alex Dinca, Nick Dunne, Simon Broughton

Thankful for our Deacon’s Board…

  • The deacons would first like to express our gratitude to Nathan Wassink for his many years of faithful service as deacon to GBC. His dedication and selflessness was an expression of his love for God and his love for this church. Thank-you Nathan!

As deacons we have the unique privilege of witnessing how God works through His people, to care for and minister to our local congregation and community. So many of you have willingly given of your time and resources and therefore, in many ways, often unknowingly, taken on the role of deacon in your own way. Thank-you GBC for your love, care and compassion for one another!

The deacon’s ministry at GBC meets regularly throughout the year to discuss the benevolent and physical needs of the church. God has blessed this group with the various gifts and talents often needed to help understand and discern the various needs of GBC and we are thankful to each one for their willingness to share these gifts with the church. As deacons we pray that He will raise up more leaders within this church to share in the blessing of this work, so that we may care well for His people and this building.

May God continue to use this team for His glory!

Sunday Gatherings

Coming together to find rest and relationship in God through gospel-centred worship, discipleship and community.

What a gift it is to come together each week and worship God together through the preaching, singing and prayer of His Word. In 2023, we journeyed through the books of Hebrews, Ruth and Lamentations with a summer series on When God Asks Questions. At the end of the year, we came to see the story of the gospel through the Christmas story.

We came together on Sundays to celebrate the Lord’s Supper together, witness baptisms, rejoice with one another, and even grieve loss together. All of this we did growing together in the unity of the faith.

“Grace Bible Church is a church that truly strives towards her name. Everything I have encountered at GBC has been Bible-centred and grace-filled. From my first Sunday, GBC has been a church that weeps with those who weep and rejoices with those who rejoice, and it has truly felt like coming home!”

— Hebrews 6:1 (CSB)

Ministry Internships

We were blessed in 2023 to be able to have an intern program where college and seminary students were able to grow in their knowledge of God, serve and lead in areas of ministry and participate in an intentional discipleship program. We had a total of 2 interns at different times of the year.

Young Adult Ministry

Throughout the previous year, our focus centred on Redemption Revealed and Faith as part of our theme. It has been a fulfilling time coming together to worship God collectively, engage in prayer, receive biblical teachings, and explore the practical implications of the gospel in our daily lives. We consistently gathered with an average of 21 young adults every week.

Youth Ministry

It has been encouraging to witness the gospel taking hold in the lives of these young individuals, as they demonstrate a growing commitment to their walk with God. In the year 2023, we observed an attendance of over 70 youths at our youth gatherings, with an average weekly participation ranging from 25 to 40.

Children’s Sunday School and Kids’ Bible Time

We continued using the Gospel Project for both Sunday School (average weekly attendance of 61) and Kids’ Bible Time (average weekly attendance of 18) and are so grateful for the opportunity to instruct children with the gospel and grace of Jesus. Thank you to all of our volunteers who help make this possible!

Nursery Ministry

It is a great joy and honour to nurture children, offering this valuable service to families and parents. We are delighted to witness a rise in nursery attendance, accompanied by an increasing number of newborns and volunteers responding to the growing needs. We are grateful to God for enabling us to minister in this capacity, experiencing an average weekly attendance of 27 children.

Grace Kids’ Camp

We were excited to kick off our Grace Kids’ Camp ministry this year with a week using the Keepers of the Kingdom Answers in Genesis Camp theme from Answers in Genesis. Special thank you to Amy Wassink and all the 40 dedicated volunteers who made this possible. We saw 122 children participate plus 11 occupying the nursery!

CONNECTION GROUP MINISTRY

Life is better … connected!

let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.
— Hebrews 10:22-23 (CSB)

2023 was a year of continued growth for GBC Connection Groups. Despite challenges, it has been encouraging to see groups supporting and caring for their members.!

“This group was a blessing to me this year. I enjoyed getting to know more women at Grace and learned a lot from the studies we did.”

16

Group Leaders

“Facilitated well, kept on track, allowed discussion, but reigned us in when necessary, didn't have all the answers and encouraged us to dig deeper on our own as well.”

ADULT MINISTRIES

Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
— Hebrews 12:1-2 (CSB)

Adult Sunday School

This was our third year offering two Adult Sunday school classes each Sunday morning. It was encouraging to see both classes continue to explore the Bible, faith and theology together with an average attendance of 25 in each class each week. Once again, we took a break from our regular format in January to focus on Missions - with great involvement from those we support and from our GBC family..

Men’s Prayer Group

A group of men meet on Wednesday mornings at 6:00 am praying through and working through passages of scripture together.

Women’s Bible Studies

Meeting weekly on Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings.

Men and Women’s Ministries

We returned to more normal programming for men’s and women’s ministries this year, hosting Men’s Breakfasts regularly and varying Women’s events. Chad Mank and Nandor Weisz have continued to provide leadership to the men’s ministry, while Cassandra Vedder gave leadership to the women’s ministry, with the support of a planning team.

Prayer Meetings

Throughout 2023, we had various prayer meetings running. It is a joy to come together as the church and bring our petitions and thanksgivings before the Lord.

Seniors’ Ministry

The Senior’s luncheon ministry has established a regular schedule of events. Thank you to Nathan Ecker and the planning team for making this ministry possible.

WORLDWIDE MISSIONS

God has blessed us with the means necessary to support and care for various missionaries serving throughout the world…

Let brotherly love continue
— Hebrews 13:1 (CSB)

What a privilege it is to participate in ministries globally. We aim to concentrate our missionary efforts on spreading the Gospel both locally and internationally. In 2023, we consistently gathered and achieved our objectives in ensuring the congregation remained well-informed about GBC's mission endeavours.

Throughout the year, we welcomed several missionaries to share during our Sunday services and devoted the entire month of January to emphasizing missions in our adult and children's Sunday School curriculum! Let's continue to uplift our missionaries in prayer as they carry out the work God has placed before them!

Engaging the World

We are Engaging the World with the gospel through our missionaries ministering in such areas as Ireland (Kevin & Christine Gabriel - RTIM), Southern Africa (Roland & Susan Seiler – Wycliffe), Haiti (Lisa DeGraaf – OMS), Europe (Peter and Anna Pikkert – WEC) and Asia (KA - Pioneers), Cuba (Pastor David).

Engaging our Community

We are Engaging our Community in Cambridge as we continue to support and are actively involved in ministries such as Mission to the Margins (Jeff Hesselink) and the Dawn Pregnancy Centre.

VOLUNTEERING AND SERVING

Equip. Serve. Care.

Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16 Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.
— Hebrews 13:15-16 (CSB)

Thank you to all our volunteers!

No matter your volunteer role at Grace Bible Church — be it welcoming congregants on Sundays, tenderly tending to children in the nursery and during Sunday school, ministering to the needy, preparing meals, or any other service — we express our deepest gratitude to you! We are truly blessed by the dedicated volunteers who selflessly serve God by serving each other. The Grace Bible Church community appreciates you as you utilize your gifts to build up the church and honour God.

How can you serve in 2024 and beyond?

Needs Moving Forward

At Grace Bible Church, there are opportunities to contribute to the Lord's work, regardless of your gifts, availability, or skills. Whether it's in administration, practical assistance, giving, or offering encouragement, every act of service is valuable. By serving in any capacity, we not only bring blessings to others but also receive blessings ourselves. Through service, we experience spiritual growth, nurture our talents, and play a role in strengthening the church body while honouring Jesus Christ as our leader.

Treasurer Report

We have much to be thankful for in how God has been providing for Grace Bible Church. To Him alone be the glory!

2023 Treasurer Report and Highlights

  • Donations to the general fund were $634,000 or $3,000 below budget for 2023.

  • As previously published for the budget meeting, the financials show a deficit in the general fund of approx. $15,000 before amortization.  Unfortunately, we had budgeted $50,000 for the building maintenance fund but only $5,000 was received in donations, which solely resulted in the deficit. Thankfully, operating and ministry expenses were below budget, which helped, reduce the deficit. Rental income was also below what was budgeted.

  • In the Building Renovation Fund, donations totalled $512,000. These and other funds pledged will be utilized in the revised renovation project. New pews are now on order!

  • Bank balance of $378,000 at the end of 2023, which is an increase of $73,000 over 2022.

  • New accounting software implemented in 2023 has provided more up-to-date information.

  • GBC transitioned banks from TD to RBC. This has gone well and we are happy with the service level we are receiving from the new bank.

  • General offerings so far for 2024, are tracking behind budget as the recent financial update indicated.

2023 AUDIT REPORT

At the time of this report, we have not yet received the audited financial statements from our accounting firm MAC LLP. The draft statements will be sent out as soon as they are received.  Therefore, some of the numbers and comments below may differ slightly to the final report. If any significant changes, we will provide an update. We are thankful for the generosity of the congregation in support of the ministries at GBC.

Giving and Bank Balance Review

We are truly grateful for the overwhelmingly generous and sacrificial response that we have received towards the renovation project. It is a testament to the grace of God that we have been able to successfully raise $1.35 million for our $1.5 million sanctuary renovation and to address other essential building requirements. In light of this, let us together uplift our hearts in thanksgiving and praise to God for His abundant goodness and provision that he has bestowed upon us during this season.

Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus—the great Shepherd of the sheep—through the blood of the everlasting covenant equip you with everything good to do his will, working in us what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
— Hebrews 13:20-21 (CSB)
